THE NIGHTMARE.!

When you make a significant move and over 75 years old, it’s a monumental decision. The reasons behind such a move can be varied, ranging from personal growth to family matters.

Our decision to move to the Azores, Portugal, was partially influenced by our 10-day Christmas vacation in Ponta Delgada in 2024. We wanted to experience the place firsthand and determine if it was the right place to spend our remaining years. Therefore, we rented a small house in Candelária, located on the southwestern coast of the main island, São Miguel, for the month of April 2025. 

Now to the paperwork collection, however, I did collect all the documents required, except the NONE existing document from the Danish consulate, that made me lose 20 days++!! (All downhill from here) I will wait to share more about my journey until I have resolved the customs process for my car. The final words of the story will depend on whether I will have to pay 22,000 euros in taxes and fees on an almost 30 year old car that should be waived as part of our relocation of residence, or maybe go a total different route. By the way all my information  is from e-mails and SMS's and I have a lot - after all it is Portugal.!!  

Nevertheless, I must express my frustration with the professional broker handling the case for my car with the Customs officials. Their actions have disrupted my wife’s and my daily routines, transforming our once peaceful and relaxing retirement into a complete nightmare.

It seems that no one is capable of making the right decision concerning the correct paperwork and this situation has become increasingly frustrating for us. Meeting with Broker on June 11 at a small coffee shop called Pink in Ponta Delgada, this was to me a total disaster and NOT professional at all when sitting in a small place with people all around you. I was very uncomfortable talking to her because of the very serious business I am dealing with.

On June 16, we also had a meeting at my house where Broker, Victor, Rita, and I were present. At that meeting, Broker once more pointed out that the only way to get this done was to get a statement from the Danish consulate stating my change of resident from the US to PT. After the meeting, I called the Danish consulate in Tampa to try to get this process moving, but no pickup. I did leave a message, but no return to my message. On my birthday (76) June 17, I called twice and left a message - no return call. On June 22, I also called the consulate in Miami, FL, and spoke to Mr. Jon Rosenthal, and he explained to me that they do not provide that service simply because they do not have any records. By the way, on June 16, I also sent an email message to the Danish Consulate in Tampa  and finally got an answer on July 8 stating that the Danish consulate does not handle questions like that because they do not have any records of my whereabouts. 

Next chapter is more or less ready, just waiting to see what’s next - it will all depend on broker, customs, and IMT.
